Hawaii Attorney General Anne Lopez just cracked open a massive antitrust case, securing a nationwide settlement with major egg producers like Cal-Maine Foods and Hickman's Egg Ranch.
The state alleged that these corporate giants secretly coordinated their bidding activities to manipulate the daily egg price index from June 2022 to March 2025. By artificially inflating the numbers, they forced Hawaii families and local businesses to pay heavily marked-up prices for a basic kitchen staple.
How "Eggflation" Hit Hawaii (2022–2025)
The price-fixing period completely upended normal grocery pricing in Honolulu:
The Squeeze: Between 2021 and early 2025, mainland imported eggs surged 51.8%, jumping from an average of $5.50 up to $8.35 per dozen.
The Record High: Price manipulation, compounded by continental bird flu outbreaks, drove mainland egg prices to a historical peak of $9.46 per dozen in Honolulu by March 2025.
The Local Ripple Effect: Because mainland imports became so expensive, the historic 25% price gap between local and imported eggs completely vanished. Local farms faced intense demand and rising feed costs, pushing local conventional eggs to a matching peak of $9.51 per dozen.
🚛 A Massive Delivery is Coming
While a national $3.3 million payout is part of the deal, the real victory for Hawaii comes in a much more edible form.
Instead of waiting years for a few dollars to trickle down via class-action checks, the settlement mandates a massive corporate donation: 53 million eggs distributed to food banks across the country.
The local impact: Hawaii's share is roughly 1 million eggs.
Because shipping fresh food across the Pacific is a logistical puzzle, these eggs are going straight to local food banks and non-profit organizations. It is an immediate boost for local families fighting food insecurity across the islands.
🛑 Cracking Down on Collusion
Moving forward, these producers have to play by the rules. Under the new court stipulations, the companies must:
Appoint dedicated antitrust compliance officers.
Open their books to state and U.S. Department of Justice oversight.
Stop talking to each other about pricing.
So, next time you walk into Foodland or your local Costco, you can breathe a little easier knowing the playing field is getting leveled.
