Hawaii has enacted a new law limiting how businesses can contribute to political campaigns, a move that supporters say could reduce the influence of business money in elections.

SB 2471 (Act 11)

  • Prohibits corporations, LLCs, partnerships, nonprofits, and other artificial entities from spending money or contributing anything of value to influence elections or ballot measures.

  • Preserves the political rights of individual people ("natural persons").

  • Allows enforcement and penalties for violations.

  • Applies to entities organized under Hawaii law and certain entities doing business in Hawaii.

  • Signed into law May 14, 2026.

  • Takes effect July 1, 2027.

Lawmakers in other states are now watching Hawaii's approach as they consider similar legislation.
