The U.S. Department of Justice has been directed to investigate whether gasoline prices are staying higher than they should despite a recent drop in oil prices.

The probe comes as Brent crude oil, the global benchmark, has fallen below $77 a barrel following easing concerns about Middle East supply disruptions.

Oil industry groups argue that gas prices don't move in lockstep with crude oil because refining, transportation, and distribution costs also affect what drivers pay at the pump.

The investigation could shed light on whether current fuel prices reflect normal market conditions or whether consumers are paying more than necessary.

For drivers, the key question is simple: if oil prices continue to fall, will gas prices follow?
