If your store restocks from the mainland, this one is for you.
Starting October 1, USPS officially extended its delivery window for packages coming into Hawaii. https://postalpro.usps.com/node/15616 Ground Advantage, the go-to budget option for small businesses shipping goods across the Pacific, now carries an estimated 10 or more days. Before the change, it was two to five. USPS also noted some shipments could run significantly longer than 10 days.
The reason: sub-pound Ground Advantage packages to and from Hawaii now move primarily by boat instead of a mix of air and surface. USPS framed it as a safety measure to keep hazardous materials off planes. The side effect is slower everything.
Priority Mail is not immune either. That is now two to four days for Hawaii, up from three. Only Priority Mail Express stayed the same.
What This Means for the Holidays
For local retailers, the math heading into the holidays gets tighter fast. USPS set December 16 as its last recommended ship date for Ground Advantage packages to reach Hawaii by Christmas. That is a week and a half earlier than most people think to start worrying about it.
Businesses that can absorb the cost should move time-sensitive restocking to Priority Mail. For anything non-urgent, Ground Advantage still works fine. Just do not count on it moving like it used to.
