Getting to Hawaiʻi is about to become a little easier for West Coast travelers.

Southwest Airlines is adding more flights between California and Hawaiʻi, with San Diego emerging as one of the airline's fastest-growing gateways to the islands. The expanded schedule reflects strong demand for leisure travel and Southwest's continued investment in one of its most popular markets.

The airline already connects California travelers to Honolulu, Maui, Kauaʻi, and Hawaiʻi Island, and the latest additions increase flight frequency rather than adding entirely new destinations. More departures give travelers greater flexibility while providing Hawaiʻi with additional visitor capacity from one of its largest tourism markets.

California has long been Hawaiʻi's biggest source of visitors, with travelers from the U.S. West accounting for the largest share of arrivals each year. By increasing service from San Diego, Southwest is strengthening its position in a market where it competes with Hawaiian Airlines, Alaska Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and United Airlines.

Why it matters

More flights typically mean more seats available for travelers, which can help support tourism, local businesses, hotels, restaurants, and attractions across the islands.

For Hawaiʻi's visitor industry, the expansion is another sign that airlines remain confident in demand from the U.S. mainland. As international travel continues to recover at a slower pace, domestic routes, particularly from California, continue to be the backbone of Hawaiʻi's tourism economy.
