Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard & U.S. Coast Guard Admiral Paul Zukunft Discuss Disaster Readiness

Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard (HI-02) met with the Commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard, Admiral Paul Zukunft, to discuss current missions, national security concerns, and issues that affect Hawaiʻi and the Asia-Pacific region, as well as the current budgetary constraints and their impact on maintenance and readiness. They also spoke about preparing for hurricane season, upcoming RIMPAC exercises, and disaster readiness for the state of Hawaiʻi.

 

  • Admiral Zukunft is visiting from the U.S. Coast Guard’s headquarters in Washington, DC and leads the largest component of the Department of Homeland Security, composed of 88,000 personnel including active duty, reserve, civilian, and volunteer auxiliaries.

 

After their meeting, he and Rep. Tulsi Gabbard toured Base Honolulu and met with the crew responsible for law enforcement, safety, and rescue in Hawaii’s ocean waters.
